SANE Australia gets ready to launch a new mental health art program
24 November 2021 at 4:10 pm

From next year, Victorians living with mental health issues are set to benefit from a new arts program.

A transformative new arts program offering creative expressions and social connection for 35 artists living with mental health issues is set to launch in February 2022.

Delivered by The Dax Centre, SANE Australia’s dedicated arts centre, the Studio Dax program invites people living with psychological trauma, neurodiversity, or mental health issues to participate in art workshops, work towards an exhibition or even sell their art at The Dax Centre.

Program participants will work with Studio Dax’s staff artists to further develop their creative skills. They’ll get to explore various art mediums such as painting, drawing and sculpture and build on their confidence and independence at the same time.

The Studio Dax program is building on the wealth of research showing that art and creativity can increase social inclusion and mental wellbeing and decrease anxiety and depression.

The Dax Centre Director, Charmaine Smith, said art can play a significant part in a  person’s recovery from trauma or mental health issues.

“We know that creative expression can transform the lives of people that have lived experience of mental health issues,” Smith said.

“Studio Dax gives people the opportunity to work with our  staff artists over the course of a year, and see where their art journey can take them.”

Expressions of interest for Studio Dax are now open here
